Sir David Brewer KG CMG CVO: Tribute

Sir David was a pioneer in establishing and promoting financial services links between the UK and China. He opened the China office of the Sedgwick Group in 1981, the first such office of a UK insurance broker. Later he was instrumental in establishing in 1992, and then leading the CBBC/ British Invisibles Working Group on China, the forerunner of today’s China Market Action Group. In this role he led many financial services missions to China, which he also visited during his time in office as Lord Mayor of London ( 2005/6).
Sir David was a longstanding member of the CBBC Board, including as Honorary Treasurer, before becoming CBBC’s Chairman from 2007-2013. In this role he led the work of CBBC at a time of enormous growth in business ties between the UK and China. He continued to lead missions to China, and played an important role in hosting events for visiting Chinese delegations, including for many senior Chinese officials including Premier Li Keqiang, and Vice Premier Wang Qishan (see photographs).
Sir David is remembered within CBBC for his foresight about the importance of the relationship with China, and his great commitment to promoting British business there. He is also remembered warmly for the infectious energy, enthusiasm and good humour which he brought to the role. Our sincere condolences go to Lady Brewer and their daughters.
