Jiangsu is one of China’s most economically advanced provinces and a core engine of the country’s industrial and export economy, with major strengths in advanced manufacturing, electronics, chemicals, and high-tech sectors.

  • The province had a population of 85.26 million in 2024 and a GDP of £1,500 billion, with GDP per capita of about £17,600, placing it among China’s most prosperous regions.
  • Jiangsu is China’s second-largest exporting province, exporting £401.1 billion in 2024 and importing £216.2 billion, underscoring its central role in global supply chains.
  • Electronics manufacturing is a flagship industry, producing integrated circuits, laptops, solar cells, and industrial robots, with integrated circuits alone accounting for about 30% of national output.
  • The automobile sector is a major growth driver, producing 2.3 million vehicles in 2024, with new energy vehicles making up 55.7% of output, supported by strong battery production in cities such as Changzhou.
  • Key cities play specialised economic roles: Suzhou in electronics and semiconductors, Wuxi in Internet of Things and microelectronics, Changzhou in new energy vehicles, and Nanjing as a major high-tech and research hub.
  • The province combines industrial strength with cultural significance, featuring historic cities, UNESCO heritage sites, classical gardens, and traditional arts such as Kunqu Opera.

Shaanxi

Shaanxi is known for being one of China's most culturally rich provinces, home to the Terracotta Warriors as well as the former ancient capital of Xi'an. Shaanxi also serves as a key bridge between China's eastern and western regions.

  • The province had a population of 39.5 million in 2020 and a GDP of £399 billion in 2025, with GDP per capita of about £9,854 in 2024.
  • The province is a major industrial hub with strong aerospace, defence, and advanced manufacturing capabilities, including an aviation and unmanned aircraft industry worth £21.4 billion (2024).
  • Shaanxi is a critical energy base, producing 4.98 billion tons of coal in 2024, ranking third in China, and playing a central role in natural gas, coal-to-chemicals, and energy security strategy.
  • The province is deeply embedded in global semiconductor supply chains, where integrated circuits account for 60% of its top five exports and 69% of its top five imports, supported by around 120 semiconductor design companies in Xi’an.
