CBBC's Chair Visit - May 2024: A summary.

Between 13th-17th May, Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles, Chair of CBBC, led a week-long visit to China together with senior executives from British business. The below is a summary of the visit covering each of the three legs in Shanghai, Hangzhou, and Beijing.

On Wednesday, 15th May CBBC Chair Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles, together with a delegation of 11 British companies, met with Premier Li Qiang at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

Government Meetings

During the visit, Sir Sherard and the delegation engaged with senior government officials at ministerial and provincial level.

CBBC marked 70-years since our founding with a gala dinner at the St. Regis Hotel on Thursday, 16th May in Beijing.

First UK-China CEO and Former Senior Officials' Dialogue

On Thursday, May 16, CBBC and the China Center for International Economic Exchanges (CCIEE) co-hosted the first UK-China CEO and Former Senior Officials' Dialogue in Beijing.

Wednesday-Friday, 15th-17th May

Beijing leg

During the three-day trip in Beijing, Sir Sherard and the delegation also met with Fang Xinghai, Vice Chairman of China Stock Regulatory Commission, Yu Yuantang, Director-General of the Department of European Affairs at the Ministry of Commerce. The programme also included breakfast with HMA and discussion with international trade bodies and policy watchers including USCBC, EUCCC, CCBC, AustCham, and Hutong Research. Meanwhile, we hosted a roundtable meeting with member companies and a meeting with the China International Youth Exchange Center in CBBC Beijing office. The delegation also paid a visit to Xiaomi Giga Factory.

Tuesday, 14 May

Hangzhou leg

During the second leg of the visit, Sir Sherard and a delegation of senior executives of British businesses engaged with Lu Shan, Vice Governor of Zhejiang, and Liu Jie, Party Secretary of Hangzhou, as well as visited Geely and Alibaba.

Monday, 13 Friday

Shanghai leg

During their one-day stay in Shanghai, Sir Sherard and the delegation had a busy programme which included breakfast with the Consul General of Shanghai, a roundtable discussion with senior representatives from CBBC members, a briefing on China's economy with three leading economists, a chair visit reception, as well as a visit to Trip.com Group.
