The 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) will be ratified during the “Two Sessions” meeting of China’s National People’s Congress this March, marking a new era in China’s economic, political, and social development. Serving as the blueprint and scorecard for economic policy over the next 5 years, the 14th Five-Year Plan is expected to deepen China’s commitment to a “Dual Circulation” strategy of strengthening China’s own consumer market whilst promoting technological upgrading of its manufacturing sector.

Technology and Innovation is now central to China’s medium-term vision. The Five-Year Plan outlines China’s commitment to the goal of technology self-reliance, encouraging “indigenous innovation” in the fields of artificial intelligence, quantum computers, semiconductors, health and life sciences, neuroscience, biological engineering, aerospace technologies, and deep-sea exploration. Our forum will explore the full implications of China’s Five-Year Plan for trade and investment in tech and innovation, with a particular focus on the UK-China relationship.

A panel of China experts will explore this topic from several perspectives:

How will China’s goals impact trade and investment flows?

In which sectors will China emerge as a leading innovator?

Where will the main points of conflict be? Where will the main opportunities for foreign investors in China?

How will US-China political frictions impact China’s ambitions?

How will these issues be impacted by the ongoing Covid-19, and how can UK-based tech firms best take advantage of emerging opportunities in China?
