CBBC is delighted to host a Premium-only online briefing with HM Consul-General Wuhan, Gareth Hoar, on Tuesday, 16 March 2021.

Gareth became HM Consul General Wuhan in September 2018 and represents the UK government in Wuhan City, Hubei Province and Henan Province.

During this session Gareth will provide an update on the latest in his region followed by a live discussion with members on the line.

This session is the second in our 2021 series of HM Consul-General briefings. We will be engaging with the Chongqing, and Guangzhou representatives in subsequent months.

Gareth Hoar, Consul‐General, British Consulate-General Wuhan

Gareth joined the UK Diplomatic Service in 1984 and first worked in the British Embassy in Beijing as a commercial attaché (1986-1988), followed by assignments in Santiago and Washington. He returned to China as Vice Consul in 1997, helping re-open the British Consulate General in Guangzhou, and later reporting on economic and political issues in southern China. On transfer to the British Embassy in Beijing in 2002 Gareth supported UK financial services companies entering the market following China's accession to the WTO. From 2005-2007 he led the China bilateral relations team at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in London. After a secondment to the City of London’s Economic Development Office, Gareth returned to Beijing in 2008 as China Deputy Director of UK Trade & Investment. Between 2012 and 2016 Gareth was British Consul-General in Melbourne. In 2017,  Gareth become As Minister-Counsellor and Director in the Department for International Trade at the British Embassy in Beijing Gareth leads a team that promotes export opportunities for UK companies in the creative industries, consumer and education sectors and supports their business development in China. From 2018, Gareth become the HM Consul-General in Wuhan.
