2020 and 2021 are the years of change. Under the pandemic and a new era of geopolitics, we have witnessed:

  • The launch of the Beijing Stock Exchange in November 2021, making the third stock exchange in mainland China, and the deepened reform of capital markets
  • Carbon neutrality goals set, National Emissions Trading System kicked off and various ESG regulatory movements
  • Further financial market opening-up and the first batch of retail fund management licenses granted to the international asset management giants
  • The rapid development of different asset management businesses in China’s trillions of dollars market (the second-largest asset management market in the world)
  • The new-born Hainan Free Trade Port and the vibrant Greater Bay Area, more opportunities for international investors in China’s south end
  • Looming property crisis (Evergrande’s liquidity crisis), energy shortages and rising prices, refinancing, restructuring and liquidation pressure
  • Tightened regulation of and anti-trust measures against internet giants
  • Two new data security laws coming into effect, and their impacts on the relevant sectors
  • Enhanced IP protection and higher-level remedies by the Chinese courts
  • China’s first Civil Code transforming the country’s civil law system
  • The implementation of China’s new Foreign Investment Law unfolded
  • Towards the end of the year and hoping for the post-pandemic new normal, we would like to share our China insights with London’s business contacts and professional communities, discuss interactively and exchange our thoughts under the Chatham House Rule.
