Under the vision of "carbon neutrality", it has become particularly important to improve the construction of electricity markets and optimise cross-regional electricity deployment. As the reform of the electricity system continues to develop in depth, the scale of market-based electricity trading is expanding, the electricity spot market is in operation, and the awareness of market players to participate is gradually increasing.

Under the support from HMG’s Prosperity Fund, the Guangdong Electric Power Design Institute (GEDI) cooperates with AFRY Management Consulting and China Energy Engineering Group Yunnan Electric Power Design Institute, has undertaken a detailed study of South China’s West-to-East Power Transfer Project (the “Project”), which is a major power interconnection between China’s hydropower-rich South West region and Guangdong province – China’s major Southern economic hub. (The project falls under the UK and China’s long-term strategic programme of collaboration under the UK-China Clean Energy Partnership, a milestone agreement between both governments bolstering collaboration on low-carbon and sustainable energy issues.)

And as a major hydropower producer, Yunnan is actively involved in power market reform and cross-regional power deployment. Yunnan province - one of China’s South-Western provinces, has a population nearing 50 million, and an electricity market approximately half that of the UK’s. With recent GDP averaging over 8%, and a rapidly growing industrial sector attracted by plentiful local clean energy resources and government policy, the province presents a range of long-term attractive fundamentals.

In this webinar, the team will present the commercial report of the Project regarding investment and opportunities in South China, focusing on Yunnan province. Through this webinar, you can have a view of:

  • How has the electricity market in Yunnan province evolved over the past five years and how might it change out to 2050?
  • What are the key market and policy trends that are shaping opportunities in the electricity sector?
  • What are their routes to market?
  • What export opportunities exist in the electricity sector?

The Project have examined emerging opportunities for UK investors and exporters in the rapidly developing electricity market in China’s Yunnan province. CBBC calls on its members and UK companies to pay close attention to China's electricity market, formulate strategies to adapt to future changes through the policies and developments of the electricity trading markets in different regions, and participate in this webinar to actively ask questions and exchange views.
