Event Recap: CBBC UK Alumni Industry Forum - Ecological Conservation and ESG Practices

Dr Yu Wang, Research Assistant Professor, Institute of Digital Medicine at City University of Hong Kong
Dr Yu Wang, Research Assistant Professor at City University of Hong Kong, presented the concept of “Community-Driven Science,” designed to make scientific innovation more accessible to the public. His initiatives include:
- Community Engagement Activities: These include online salons, offline science-art exhibitions (featuring microscopic imagery and brief science talks), and youth hackathons for 10–20-year-olds to develop AI-based health management games. These initiatives aim to popularise science through entertaining and creative formats while promoting intergenerational dialogue.
- Biomedical Data Projects: Focused on individual health data sovereignty, blockchain technology is used to secure data ownership. Plans include integrating personal health databases with AI models to develop personalised health assistants, while contributing to a long-term data lake for pharmaceutical research, fostering “co-creation and shared benefit.”

Irene Zhang, representative of Honor Device Co., Ltd.,
Irene Zhang, representing Honor Device, shared the company’s ESG strategy, highlighting three key areas: green sustainability, responsible technology, and youth empowerment:
- Green Sustainability: Measures include producing environmentally friendly products (improving durability and using sustainable materials), adopting green manufacturing practices, and committing to operational carbon neutrality by 2040 and full supply chain neutrality by 2050.
- Responsible Technology: AI solutions are being developed to support accessibility, such as offline captioning for the hearing impaired and assistive functions for the visually impaired, enabling broader digital inclusion.
- Youth Empowerment: Through global design competitions and youth initiatives, young people are provided with platforms to showcase innovation in technology and the arts.

The forum continued with a roundtable discussion on social responsibility and sustainable philanthropy, covering:
- The Value of Altruism: Acts of altruism generate emotional value and address niche needs not fully met by public services, including support for rare disease communities.
- Sustainability in Philanthropy: Institutional incentives are essential, such as linking “social impact scores” to taxation, utilising Web3 financial models to attract low-risk, high-return funding, and encouraging corporate reverse innovation driven by regulatory frameworks to enhance competitiveness of green products.
- Public Participation: Engagement can be fostered through interest-driven activities and role transformation, encouraging participants to move from recipients to creators, thereby promoting co-creation and shared benefit.
The forum concluded with an open-mic session, allowing alumni to share their interests and further deepen professional and academic exchanges.
