Intellectual Property Innovation & Entrepreneurship Contest (IPIEC) Global 2017

China’s innovation ecosystem has been developing rapidly over recent years and the country is now moving from a position of follower to that of a leader in some fields. It is also increasingly creating a nurturing environment for creative business thinkers and innovators.

In order to promote innovation and entrepreneurship, WTOIP has been organising the Intellectual Property Innovation & Entrepreneurship Contest (IPIEC) since 2015. In 2017 for the first time, it will expand across international boundaries and organise IPIEC Global. In this, WTOIP recognises that true innovation is increasingly international and that the China market is increasingly attractive to innovators from all over the world, thanks to its size but also thanks to the capabilities available in the market (Talent, facilities, supply chain). IPIEC Global aims to bring opportunities in the China market to innovators from around the world.

The first round of IPIEC Global will take place in China, the US, the UK, Israel, Germany, Russia and Korea from August to October, 2017. The UK round of the competition, co-organised with the China-Britain Business Council (CBBC) is now open for project applications. Shortlisted projects will be invited to join the SME China Forum organised by CBBC on 26th September in Bristol to take part in a pitching contest.

IP Protection
It is strongly recommended that any company applying for this or any other IP innovation competition takes steps to register their IP in China. IP is territorial, and IP registered overseas is not automatically protected in mainland China. China is a first-to-file market, and the issue of trademark ‘squatting’ is considerable, so it is important to register any trademarks prior to engaging directly with local partners in China. Equally, patents filed in the UK provide no legal protections in the Chinese legal environment.

We would also strongly advise against submitting any information in your application for this competition that may be commercially sensitive or confidential (which may include detailed technical information and information on core IP). CBBC can provide further advice to companies when engaged in direct commercial discussions, such as usage of contracts, NDAs and undertaking due diligence on partners.

Please click HERE for further guidance from the Intellectual Property Office for further guidance on how to protect and enforce your intellectual property rights when trading in China. CBBC also has an IP toolkit jointly produced with Rouse (available HERE), focusing on protecting IP in China when engaged in join R&D projects. CBBC can also provide introductions to legal firms that can help with IP registration in China – please contact CBBC directly for more information.
