Shanghai World Expo 2010 -
a supplement of China–Britain Business Review

Published June 2010

Expo 2010 Shanghai is intended to explore the full potential of urban life in the 21st century. Fifty-five per cent of the world population live in cities. The prospect of future urban life, a subject of global interest, concerns all nations.

Participants will exchange their experiences of urban development, learn how to create an eco-friendly society and maintain the sustainable development of human beings. Expo 2010 Shanghai China will centre on innovation.

The main structure of the China Pavilion, “The Crown of the East,” has a distinctive roof, in the uniquely Chinese dougong style. Dougong features interlocking wooden brackets, and is one of the most important elements in traditional Chinese architecture.

China’s achievements in urban development from ancient to modern times are the core theme of the pavilion. The wisdom that the ancient Chinese used to develop cities is showcased in the pavilion and the Chinese with programmes of different styles.

Shanghai Expo 2010 is like no other Expo. The scale is enormous: the estimates are that up to 70m visitors will take in the Fair over six months. The total investment is around US$55bn. It provides an opportunity for each participating state to demonstrate to visitors, as well as those who view national Expo websites, how each country and its people interpret the overall Expo theme of ‘Better City, Better Life’.
