Leeds City Region Delegation visit Qingdao in mid-December
From the 12th to the 13th of December, Leeds City Region Delegation visited Qingdao with the support of the China-Britain Business Council.
The two-day programme included meetings with key local companies, including: Hisense Group, Haier Group, Huatong Group, City Construction Investment Group, and West Coast Development Group, as well as a visit to Sunac Film Metropolis. The highlight of the programme was the ‘2019 China-UK Local Economic and Trade Cooperation Qingdao Forum - British Business Week & Leeds City Region Promotional Seminar’ which was co-organised by Qingdao Bureau of Commerce and CBBC on the afternoon of 12
The delegation visited Haier Group
The seminar was attended by 150 public and private sector representatives from China and the UK. Mr Zhao Shiyu, Director-General of Qingdao Bureau of Commerce chaired the seminar. In addition, Mr Zou Chuanning, Vice Director of the Standing Committee of Qingdao Municipal People’s Congress and Mr Kiran Patel, Senior Director, CBBC delivered keynote speeches. Representatives from Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership, Leeds City Council, and Bradford UNESCO City of Film promoted their respective region and cities, and expressed their willingness to best promote trade and a successful economic relationship between Qingdao and the Leeds City Region.

CBBC Senior Director, Mr Kiran Patel delivered a keynote speech at the seminar, saying:
“Over the past 10 years, we have seen a 325% increase in the direct export of British goods to China, making it the UK’s fifth largest export market... and the increase in the export of services to China is equally impressive: seeing 14.9% year-on-year growth in 2018, and a total growth of 60.9% since 2008”.

“CBBC’s office in Qingdao was established in 2004 further reinforcing the point that our commitment to this city and its surrounding areas is long-term, sustained and impactful. It has enabled us to build a profound relationship with our major partner here, the Qingdao Bureau of Commerce”.
150 public and private sector representatives from China and the UK attended the seminar
“With more than 10 million residents and at RMB 1.2 trillion (approximately GBP 133 million) the 12th largest GDP in China, there can be no doubt that Qingdao is a key economic partner city for the UK and vice versa. Qingdao has a world-class marine sector with strong R&D capacities, the 6th largest port in the world and the largest in Northern China with a throughput of 540 million tonnes; and is home to world class manufacturers Haier, Hisense, and CRRC”.
“I’d like to conclude my remarks by once again thanking our hosts and we look forward with great optimism to the deepening of trade, investment, people to people and civic partnership between Qingdao and the UK.”
