CBBC Scotland Celebrates 25th Anniversary with Dinner in Glasgow
On 8th October 2019, CBBC celebrated the 25th anniversary of the opening of its first UK office outside of London – in Glasgow, which was established in 1994. A special dinner was hosted by CBBC Premium member, Weir Group, and its Chief Executive, Mr Jon Stanton, in the executive boardroom of Weir Group’s headquarters. CBBC’s new Chair, Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles, invited a select group of key stakeholders to attend the event. Amongst them were: the Scottish Government’s Minister for Trade, Investment and Innovation, Mr Ivan McKee MSP, Acting Chinese Consul General, Madame Hou Danna, and representatives from across CBBC’s members - past and present - in Scotland.
In 1994 and beyond, Weir Group’s then Chairman, The Right Honourable The Viscount Weir GCB PC, was instrumental in setting up CBBC’s Glasgow office, as well as driving CBBC’s early development in Scotland. At dinner, stories were told of Weir Group’s long-standing connection with China, and their training of Chinese engineers as far back as the 1920s, one of whom continued to send annual updates to Viscount Weir until the 1970s. Photos were then passed around of CBBC’s opening gala at Merchant Hall on George Square in 1994, as well as CBBC’s equivalent of

Our very own Tracy Baird and Claire Urry were both featured as New Starters in that edition of the magazine, and earlier this year received awards for long service to celebrate their contributions to CBBC.
In Sir Sherard’s welcoming speech at the dinner, he noted that exports from Scotland to China in 1994 amounted to only £56 million, but in 2018 had risen, by some estimates, to almost £1.5 billion. CBBC would never claim to have been responsible for all that growth, but we’d like to think we’ve played a small part along the way in making some of that possible!
Sir Sherard also paid tribute to the substantial commitment of other notable guests including Peter Budd, former Vice Chairman of CBBC, and long-standing supporter of Scotland’s interests at the CBBC Board. He was also delighted to note the presence of two fresh faces on the CBBC Board, Dr Zhi Shengke and Sharon Cheng, who represent Wood and Clyde Blowers Capital, respectively – two key companies in Scotland’s industrial fabric.
Combined with the recruitment of a new additional permanent member of staff in our Glasgow office, Wilson Barrie, CBBC in Scotland will host its third annual
