CBBC’s Final British Business Briefing for 2019 Held in Shanghai

On Friday 6th December, CBBC hosted its 4th quarterly British Business Briefing of 2019 at CBBC premium member, Ernst & Young’s (EY’s) WaveSpace on the 43rd floor of the Shanghai World Financial Centre, Lujiazui.  

The briefing, held quarterly by CBBC to update members on policy changes and economic trends in China, was attended by 50 representatives from CBBC member companies. The event started with a warm welcome from Gary Cai (Associate Partner, EY).​


This was followed by a speech on the current state of affairs in UK-China relations by Chris Wood (HM Consul-General, British Consulate-General Shanghai), who presented a general update and gave an outlook of the UK China bilateral relationship.


Mary Boyd (Director, The Economist Corporate Network) provided a presentation on the 2020 outlook of the Chinese economy, specifically the ongoing US-China trade war and which Chinese domestic markets are performing the strongest.  


Maria Kotova (Head of UK and Ireland Business Development, Dezan Shira & Associates) then presented the new Foreign Investment Law which will come into effect on 1st January 2020 and how it will impact foreign businesses operating in China. 


The session was closed by Mingqi Yu (Senior Manager, EY), who explained recent changes to individual tax laws that would affect foreign nationals working in China. 


Following the presentations, guests were invited to network and follow up with additional questions to the speakers. The next CBBC quarterly British Business Briefing is due to be held in early March 2020.
