On Tuesday 25th June 2019, CBBC hosted its Q2 2019 British Business Briefing at the St Regis Hotel in Shanghai. The briefing focused on the outlook for the Chinese economy and cross-border opportunities for UK companies.
Opening remarks were delivered by John Edwards (British Consul-General, Shanghai) and Jeff Astle (Managing Director, CBBC), who outlined strong UK-China cooperation in education and at a senior government level. Stephen Baron (Deputy Director, DIT) then offered his perspectives on recent governmental cooperation and the UK-China 10th Economic and Financial Dialogue
Li Wei (Executive Director and Senior Economist, Standard Chartered Bank) gave a fascinating keynote speech on the economic outlook in China, sharing his insights regarding the US-China trade dispute, as well as scenarios for its future direction.
David Ingles (TV Anchor, Journalist, and Writer, Bloomberg) featured in a China-UK economic and investment panel discussion, which also included panellists Fu Shipeng (Founder, LondonKe), Shuang Cicy (Head of FinTech, DIT), and Li Wei (Executive Director and Senior Economist, Standard Chartered Bank). The discussion covered recent developments in real estate, education, and fintech, and was moderated by Ma Weifeng (Director, Stakeholder Relations East China, CBBC). These were the highlights from the session:
- The UK-China relationship is strengthening, signalled by the Shanghai-London Stock Connect and the Economic and Financial Dialogue;
- The UK technology sector is particularly exposed to the US-China trade dispute;
- There are currently many opportunities for UK companies to explore as China’s financial sector continues to open up.
CBBC would like to thank the more than 50 participants that attended this event, many of whom represent senior management positions at leading UK multinational companies. The attendees contributed greatly to a lively Q&A discussion and partook in the subsequent networking drinks reception.
