Leisure & Tourism
China now represents over 9% of the worldwide tourist market. Over 16 million Chinese tourists went abroad in 2002, and the WTO forecasts that China will receive 230 million tourists annually by 2020 making it the world's top tourist destination. Chinese citizens have been permitted to travel internationally for leisure purposes since 1991. They are increasingly taking holidays and spending abroad, generating opportunities for enterprises who can cater for their particular interest and needs.
The untapped potential of China as a tourist destination is enormous. China is beginning to capitalize upon the benefits of its ancient culture, as steady improvement in people's living standards have resulted in the tourism industry becoming a new growth engine behind China's economy.
Big events such as the Beijing 2008 Olympics and the 2010 World Fair in Shanghai are eagerly anticipated major contributors to the rapid development of the Chinese tourism and leisure industries.
In Beijing alone, 32 museums have been identified for construction and renovation as part of the drive to develop the city's tourism industry before 2008.
