This is a critical period of your China business strategy. Get it right and it will take time but you will good foundations for successful business in China. Get it wrong and you will have a painful and expensive experience.

- Don’t forget the basics. Make sure you have a sound business proposition and observe your normal business instincts.
- Remember China is not one single national market. Understand the regional complexity and develop a China strategy.
- Do your homework. Conduct market research and due diligence. Make sure your activities are sufficiently funded.
- Recognise the value of relationships. Build credentials and trust by utilising contacts and support network.
- Be patient and persistent. Be prepared for challenges, competition and don’t underestimate market expectations.
Be familiar with the options
Setting Up in China presents companies with a range of options. You may use Agents & Distributors to sell your products. You may want to have your own presence on the ground. CBBC’s Launchpad service offers a cost effective route to representation. Alternatively you may choose to open Representative Offices. Some companies want to work with a local partner and establish Joint Ventures while Incorporation of a wholly foreign owned enterprise is more appropriate for others. Once you have decided to establish a presence in China, you will also need to consider the options for Employing Staff.
