About the Latest Regional Cities Report

*Professor Peter Buckley, a contributor to the report from Leeds University, has just been made an OBE in the Queen's 2012 New Year's Honours List. Congratulations Peter!*

The latest research report on ‘Opportunities for UK Businesses in China’s regional cities’ shows that there is a wealth of opportunities across a broad number of sectors, and UK companies need to look beyond the traditional business locations in China.

The original ‘Opportunities for UK Businesses in China’s Regional Cities’ report, published in September 2008, received positive feedback from both British and Chinese businesses and was warmly welcomed by the Chinese Government. The report focused attention on the market expansion and development of China’s Regional Cities and the relevance of this to British businesses.

However, in the last three years there have been several major economic and political developments which have impacted British business and their internationalisation prospects. The global financial crisis and UK recession which began in 2008 have changed the international economic landscape. China was not immune to this and the country launched its own financial stimulus package of US$400bn in late 2008. As a consequence of the global economic challenges, annual inward foreign direct investment shrunk by a third in 2008, but has recovered since. The positive development is reflected by the Chinese economy being valued at US$5.8 trillion in 2010, overtaking Japan to become the second-largest economy behind the USA.

The new report presents the findings of research conducted in 2011 by CBBC and the Centre for International Business at the University of Leeds (CIBUL) for and on behalf of UKTI. The report takes into account the major economic and political developments that have taken place over the past three years and impacted British businesses and their internationalisation prospects.

Request for information from companies with interest in Qinghai
Following a recent meeting between our Chief Executive, Stephen Phillips, and the Governor of Qinghai, we are working with senior officials in the province to explore opportunities for UK businesses. Qinghai has a distinctive and fast-growing economy that we believe offers opportunities in resources, environmental protection, tourism, infrastructure and other sectors. As a next step, we are hoping to arrange a briefing session in Beijing in early December that will give member companies more information as well as access to senior-level decision-makers from Qinghai. We would be keen to hear from members who have done or are doing business in Qinghai or who are interested in exploring opportunities in the region. Contact Yuchi Chen
