CEIBS Insights 2019 | The 5th Europe Forum (London) China’s Consumption Upgrade: New Opportunities for the UK

Supported Event

October 02
The year 2019 marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and the 47th anniversary of ambassadorial-level diplomatic relations between China and the UK; it is also a year for in-depth development of China-UK relations in the “Golden Era”. At this new historic juncture, the UK is facing opportunities brought by China’s consumption upgrade in both scale and quality, its supply-side structural reform, the wider opening of Chinese market, and its “Belt and Road Initiative”. With continuous technological innovation and business model iteration, the changing landscape of global industrial chain will undoubtedly provide unprecedented opportunities for cooperation between Chinese and the UK businesses.

After four decades of sustained development, China is evolving from the factory of the world to the market of the world as its population of 1.4 billion or so is labelled as consumers instead of labours. China’s domestic consumption is in transition with the growing purchasing power of consumers and tech innovation, which will benefit companies and brands worldwide.

On October 2, 2019, over 300 scholars, entrepreneurs and senior executives from China and UK will offer their insights into new opportunities brought by China’s consumption upgrade to UK at the 5th London Forum. As “China Essence, Global Significance” is the new tagline of CEIBS 25th anniversary, this event is expected to facilitate China-UK industrial collaboration and integration, and advance cooperation among the political, business and academic communities.

New Order for Consumption Upgrade: Chinese Market and Opportunities for the UK
In this wave of consumption upgrade driven by urbanisation and demographic dividend, China’s new generation of consumers, who are dominating the consumer market, espouse the views that stand in stark contrast to those of their predecessors: no price comparison or obsession with big brands, and pursuit of individuality, quality, and consumer experience. The shift in consumer demand is presenting new opportunities to long-established UK brands with a capability for technological innovation. Their success in the Chinese market will hinge on whether they can tune into the needs of the younger generation.
