Chongqing is not everyones first choice of a travel destination within China, but it has plenty going for it. And, if you are there on business, there is more than enough to keep you interested and entertained out of hours.
Background
The municipality is the size of Wales, and has a population of 31m. It has an interesting history, having been the capital of China during the war. Its character and its economy will change when the Three Gorges dam is completed in 2009. Chongqing will directly benefit by being located on a major artificial lake, which will allow much larger ocean-going vessel to unload at its docks.
Chongqing is twinned with Leicester.

Chaotianmen Dock
Located in the northeast of the city, at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, surrounded by mountains on three sides, Chaotianmen slopes down to the rivers on each side. In 1891, Chaotianmen was opened as a trading port, but in 1927 the old city gate was pulled down to make way for the construction of Chaotianmen docks. Today the Chaotianmen Passenger Transportation Dock and the newly built Chaotianmen Square are ideal places to view the charming river scenery and where the two rivers come together to form one.
